Skinks
Skinks are the largest family of lizards in the world with over 1200 species recorded. Skinks make brilliant pets are are also great as first pets. They have hard scales that contain a mosaic of tiny bones that give the scales an armoured effect, which contributes to the tough feel of their bodies.
Housing skinks isn't difficult at all! Skinks need enclosures large enough to give them room to move about freely. Substrate can vary from aquarium gravel to red art sand, the substrate needs to be absorbent and dry. All lizards love to warm themselves in the sun in the wild, so the eclosure should have at least one radinat heat source.
Heat should be 32 - 36 degrees Celsius, with a basking spot of 40 degrees Celsius. It is very important to monitor the temperature of the basking spot as many people have been known to over heat their skinks.
Skinks eat everything from snails, cat and dog food (not fish), crickets, fruit (bananas, kiwi fruit, tomatoes, sultanas, chopped apple and pear as well as berries) and vegetables (cabbage, broccoli, lettuce, carrots, all chopped finely or diced).
